The world has changed. In May of 1848, the Great Storm struck. No one knows where it came from or what caused it, but its consequences were felt by all. Ocean levels rose. There is water near Dresden. And beyond Prešov as well. Rivers overflowed, unending rains destroyed the harvest. People are starving. Yet the ideals of the National Revival persist.

The novel features a wide range of richly developed historical characters. When the entire Czech lands are thrown into chaos—bandits roam the countryside, a military dictator has seized control of Prague, and the government in Vienna has vanished—the National Alliance emerges. A coalition of mayors, industrialists, intellectuals—and above all, ordinary people determined to protect their families amidst the catastrophe.

What began as a small group of volunteers defending the last of their food supplies quickly grows into an army. And that army will be needed, because the dictator in Prague will not tolerate anyone standing against him in the Czech lands.

The National Revival steps out of literary salons and onto the battlefield.
